What other gasses might be detected by this sensor besides CO?

This CO sensor is cross-sensitive to H2S, SO2, NO2, H2, C2H4 (Ethylene), and NO (Nitric Oxide). Details can be viewed here: http://www.citytech.com/PDF-Datasheets/2cf.pdf

will this sensor work on the BW Gamax3-4?

No that one will not. The GAMAX3-4 is the GasAlert Max. That model used a combined CO/H2S sensor. The replacement sensor for that position is still available. The part number is D4-RHM04 and you can view/purchase it here: http://www.jjstech.com/d4-rhm04.html.
